OVERVIEW :
A scenic bike tour from Catania to Palermo through Sicily’s heartland, passing Regalbuto, Nicosia, and Polizzi Generosa, blending mountain landscapes with historic hilltop towns. Ideal for experienced cyclists seeking authentic inland Sicily.
Sicily’s rugged interior, far from the crowded coastline. Departing from the lively streets of Catania, nestled at the foot of Mount Etna, the route soon turns inland, heading toward the rolling hills and wide plains of central Sicily.
The first part of the ride crosses fertile agricultural landscapes and climbs steadily toward Regalbuto, a picturesque town overlooking the Lake Pozzillo reservoir. Surrounded by fields of wheat and citrus, this area blends rural charm with sweeping panoramic views of Etna to the east.
Continuing westward, the ascent becomes more demanding as you approach Nicosia, a town perched on four rocky hills, known for its medieval architecture, noble palaces, and the Cathedral of San Nicola, with its unique Gothic-Catalan influences. The route here winds through oak forests, past isolated farmsteads and old stone bridges, offering a real sense of Sicily’s pastoral soul.
From Nicosia, the route climbs again into the Madonie Mountains, reaching Polizzi Generosa, a charming mountain village rich in history and tradition. The town, with its narrow cobbled streets and ancient churches like the Chiesa Madre and the Church of San Francesco, sits within the Madonie Natural Park, a haven of biodiversity and dramatic natural beauty.
The final stretch leads you through a patchwork of mountain passes and descending ridgelines, eventually arriving in Palermo, Sicily’s vibrant capital. Here, after days spent immersed in quiet landscapes and timeless villages, you are welcomed by the city’s chaotic beauty, historic markets, and the dazzling blend of Arab-Norman architecture that marks a grand finale to this trans-Sicilian adventure.
