Teatro Massimo Bellini:
Inaugurated on May 31, 1890, with the melodrama "Norma" by composer Vincenzo Bellini, the theater bearing his name is considered one of the city’s most significant architectural masterpieces. The neo-Baroque façade, inspired by the National Marciana Library in Venice, was designed by architect Carlo Sada, who skillfully blended various architectural styles harmoniously. The interior of the auditorium, for example, reflects influences from the Italian Renaissance and European Baroque, enriched with precious decorative elements. The horseshoe-shaped plan recalls the tradition of great European opera houses such as Milan's La Scala and Paris’s Opéra Garnier. The theater’s extraordinary acoustics, which impressed internationally renowned artists including tenor Beniamino Gigli, are due to a perfect combination of architectural and natural elements, such as the underground flow of the Amenano river. The interior is equally captivating with its gilded stuccoes, ceilings frescoed with allegories by Ernesto Bellandi celebrating the artistic genius of the Etnean composer, and elegant red velvet seats. Throughout its history, the institution has hosted great names in lyrical and symphonic music and today remains a vibrant cultural hub of Catania’s musical and artistic tradition, offering seasons of opera, symphonic concerts, and theatrical performances.
Palazzo Valle:
Among the works of Giovan Battista Vaccarini, the undisputed leader of Catania's Baroque reconstruction, is Palazzo Valle. Located at 122 Via Vittorio Emanuele, construction of the building began in the mid-18th century at the behest of Pietro La Valle and was completed about a century later. The facade is a beautiful blend of geometric and curvilinear forms, all converging on a large central balcony adorned with the Valle-Gravina family's coat of arms. From the entrance hall, two staircases lead up to the main floor. The architect Francesco Fichera, a passionate Vaccarini scholar, described the palace as having "a charm of austere grandeur, due to the simplicity of the massive building's framework, enclosed within low pilasters and crowned by a sober cornice." In 2008, the palace was restored by Alfio Puglisi Cosentino, who made it the headquarters for his foundation. Today, it serves as a space for cultural events, contemporary art exhibitions, and meetings. Visitors can admire permanent works by artists such as Giovanni Anselmo, Jannis Kounellis, and installations by Carla Accardi.
Piazza Duomo:
Following the devastating earthquake in the Val di Noto in 1693, Piazza Duomo became the emblem of 18th-century Catania's new architectural layout. As a symbol of the city's rebirth, like the legendary phoenix rising from its ashes, the square represents the new Baroque historic center, dominated by the elegant contrast between dark lava stone and white limestone. At the heart of the piazza stands the famous Elephant Fountain - or "u Liotru" to the locals. From here, three of the city’s main arteries branch out: Via Etnea, which stretches for about 3 km to the Tondo Gioeni; Via Vittorio Emanuele II; and Via Garibaldi, which leads directly to Porta Ferdinandea, known locally as "u Futtinu". Framing the square are some of the city's most representative landmarks: the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, the Palazzo degli Elefanti (Catania's City Hall), the Palazzo dei Chierici, and Porta Uzeda.
Pescheria:
Tucked away behind Piazza Duomo, between piazza Alonzo di Benedetto, piazza Pardo, and the Archi della Marina, you'll find La Pescheria - known as "A Piscaria" to the locals. It's an open-air theater where everyday life unfolds: raw, colorful, loud, and smelling of the sea. This historic fish market, carved into the 16th-century walls of Charles V, has roots going back to the 19th century. Today, among its marble and wooden stalls, you can still feel the ancient soul of the city. It's a kaleidoscope of overlapping voices, intense smells, splashing water, and shimmering flashes of silver. Here, fish isn't just displayed—it's shouted about, its story is told, and it’s sold like a tale, with grand gestures and honest eyes. Sea bass, red mullet, mussels, swordfish, sea urchins: each stall is a small world balanced between the Mediterranean and its myths.But La Pescheria is more than just a market; it's a daily ritual, a piece of the city's identity, and a tradition that stands the test of time. More authentic than Palermo's Vucciria, more visceral than any tourist shop, this is the beating heart of Catania. Castello Ursino:
Just a few minutes' walk from the lively chaos of La Pescheria - with a necessary stop at the Pozzo di Gammazita - you'll find yourself in front of a solemn corner of the city, rich with history: Castello Ursino. This majestic fortress, designed by military architect Riccardo da Lentini, was built by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century, when the sea still lapped at its walls. Today, it stands in the city center, a silent witness to centuries of history and a guardian of legends, symbols, and memories. With its square layout, severe towers, and an air of invincibility, it tells tales of battles, Aragonese kings, imprisonments, and great assemblies of the past. Crossing its threshold is like opening an old book; every room, every inscription, and every stone reveals a fragment of Catania's deep identity. Today, the castle is home to the Civic Museum and hosts exhibitions and cultural events, remaining a living testament to the city's history and culture. Castello Ursino is much more than a monument; it's the fortified heart of Eastern Sicily's memory and resilience.
Porta Ferdinandea:
After leaving the imposing presence of Castello Ursino, a fifteen-minute walk along the scenic Via Garibaldi will lead you to another doorway to the past. This street, once called Via San Filippo and later Ferdinandea, is a journey through historic palaces, Baroque churches, and stories carved in stone. It’s here that you'll find the birthplace of the writer Giovanni Verga, and where the city seems to tell its own story without needing many words. At the end of the street stands Porta Ferdinandea. This triumphal arch, made of dark Etna lava stone and white limestone from Lentini, is a symbol of resilience and rebirth. Locals simply call it "U Futtinu", but for those who pass through it, it remains a threshold between the present and the past. This ceremonial western entrance to the city was built by architects Stefano Ittar and Francesco Battaglia in 1768 to celebrate the wedding of Ferdinand IV and Maria Carolina of Habsburg-Lorraine. A large medallion with portraits of the monarchs originally topped the arch, but it was later replaced with a clock. The gate also features symbolic inscriptions like "Litteris armatur" (armed with letters) and "Armis decoratur" (decorated with arms). A coat of arms with a phoenix rising from the ashes and the motto "Melior de cinere surgo" (I rise better from the ashes) also adorns the arch. In 1862, after the end of the Bourbon kingdom, the gate was renamed Porta Garibaldi in honor of Giuseppe Garibaldi, who entered Catania through this very gate during the Expedition of the Thousand, symbolizing the unification of Italy.
Monastero dei Benedettini e Chiesa di San Nicolò:
By heading down Via Vittorio Emanuele II, you can reach the Benedictine Monastery in just a few minutes. Built in 1558, this colossal structure is a monumental example of late Sicilian Baroque architecture and one of the largest monastic complexes in Europe, covering an area of approximately 210 by 130 meters. It has survived catastrophic events, including the devastating 1669 eruption and the 1693 earthquake, and today it holds centuries of history, art, and memory. Originally, it had a square layout with an internal cloister known as the "Cloister of the Marbles" due to its elegant Carrara marble columns and Renaissance decorations. Today, it is home to the Department of Humanities at the University of Catania and preserves many historical and architectural treasures, including an ancient basement with the remains of Roman domus and a Novices' Garden. An integral part of the complex is the Church of San Nicolò l’Arena, the largest in Sicily, measuring 105 meters long with a dome rising to about 66 meters. Construction began in 1774 and was only partially completed in 1802. The church has a Latin cross plan with three naves separated by large arches. The luminous dome, designed by Stefano Ittar, creates stunning internal plays of light. The floor is a luxurious mosaic of colored marbles. The walls are simple, a striking contrast to the grandeur of the spaces, which are illuminated by large rectangular and oval windows that lighten the massive structure of the facade. Inside, you'll find works of great value, including an imposing wooden and gold organ with almost 3,000 pipes and a famous astronomical sundial from the 19th century, which can be seen in the transept. The church also houses paintings by notable Italian artists like Bernardino Nocchi and Vincenzo Camuccini, who came from not only local schools but also Roman and Neapolitan ones.
Piazza Università:
Just a short walk from the Benedictine Monastery is Piazza Università, one of the most elegant squares in Catania's historic center. Built after the 1693 earthquake, the square was designed by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini and the Battaglia brothers. Its impressive size, symmetrical layout, and lava stone paving- marked with the city's coat of arms - are striking. A standout feature is the four bronze candelabras created in 1957 by Mimì Maria Lazzaro and Domenico Tudisco. These sculptures depict famous Catania legends, from Gammazita to Colapesce, and the brothers Anapia and Anfinomo, turning the public space into an open-air museum. Among the buildings framing the square, the Palazzo Centrale dell’Università stands out. This is the main university building, which houses the Rectorate and the Regional Library. Construction began in 1696, and it still features an elegant porticoed courtyard and a magnificent Great Hall decorated with frescoes by Giovan Battista Piparo and lined with damask. The palace was renovated after an 1818 earthquake but maintained its Baroque character. On the west side of the piazza, directly opposite the main university building, are two more notable structures: Palazzo San Giuliano. Built in 1738 by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini, this palace is also home to the historic Teatro Machiavelli, which is now managed by the University Theater Center. Palazzo Gioeni d’Angiò: dating back to 1743, this building was commissioned by naturalist and volcanologist Giuseppe Gioeni d'Angiò and was also designed by Vaccarini.
Chiesa La Collegiata:
Continuing along Via Etnea, just a short walk from Piazza Università, you'll find one of the most refined examples of Catania's Baroque style: the Basilica della Collegiata, or Maria Santissima dell'Elemosina. Rebuilt in the 18th century after the 1693 earthquake, the church stands on the site of an ancient pagan temple dedicated to Proserpina, which was transformed into a Christian place of worship over the centuries. The facade, designed by Stefano Ittar in 1758, is a masterpiece of dynamic elegance, with a captivating interplay of solid and empty spaces that resembles a pipe organ. Statues of saints like Sant’Agata, San Pietro, Santa Apollonia, and San Paolo stand watch from above, while a bell tower topped with an eagle soars at the center. The Latin cross interior holds precious 19th-century frescoes by Giuseppe Sciuti and an imposing gilded wooden organ with almost 3,000 pipes. Today, it remains a beating heart of Catania's spiritual life. Solemn yet welcoming, simple yet intense, it is a place where architecture, faith, and memory intertwine in perfect balance.
Piazza Stesicoro:
Piazza Stesicoro is far more than an open square; it's a point where different worlds converge. Here, beneath the hurried footsteps of locals and tourists, lies the ancient heart of the city: the Roman Amphitheater, dating back to the 2nd century AD. It's a fragment of time that has emerged from the earth, ten meters below street level, surrounded by cars, storefronts, and Baroque palaces. The square is named after Stesichorus, a Greek-Sicilian poet whose remains were, according to tradition, buried in this area during Roman times. And just as the poet sang of heroes and myths, the square today tells its own urban legend, made of layers, contrasts, and rebirths. Behind it, you’ll find the modern Corso Sicilia, a product of the controversial demolition of the San Berillo neighborhood in the 1950s. Across from it stands the monument to Vincenzo Bellini, with the great composer keeping watch over the remains of his hometown. Then there’s the authentic voice of the city: the “Fera ‘o Luni,” a popular market that originally only took place on Mondays, which is how it got its name. Today, it's active every morning except Sunday. The square was also once home to the “Potta 'Jaci”, one of the ancient gates of the walls of Charles V. Though it's now gone, it remains a part of local memory. This detail shows that Piazza Stesicoro isn't just a place, but a threshold between past and present, where every stone invites you on a journey.
La "Fera 'o Luni:
Among the streets of Catania, there's a corner where the city pulses with authentic voices, colors, and smells: the “Fera ‘o Luni”. This historic market, despite its name, now animates Piazza Carlo Alberto every morning. It was once held only on Mondays - lunedì in Italian - but since then, it has never stopped telling the story of the city's lively, bustling popular culture. Here, fresh fruit, clothes, and tools mix with local dialect, gestures, and smiles. It’s a daily theater where trade becomes a story and every stall is a stage. Under the feet of the passersby, the ancient caves of San Gaetano whisper deeper stories of burials and legends. Built in 262 AD, the church is a unique testament to Catania's religious history. Its underground structure preserves traces of ancient cults and is linked to the devotion of Saint Agatha, who was, according to tradition, temporarily buried there. In the center of the piazza stands the Basilica Santuario del Carmine, one of Catania's main Marian places of worship. Founded by the Carmelite fathers in the mid-13th century, the church was rebuilt in Baroque style starting in 1729 after the 1693 earthquake. The facade is divided into three sections by two giant half-columns and is dominated by a large niche with a monumental statue of the Madonna del Carmine. Inside, the church has a three-nave layout with eleven side altars, which have been restored and embellished over the centuries. To this day, it remains an important center of popular devotion and local spirituality.
Villa Bellini:
Our next stop is Villa Bellini, also known as the Giardino Bellini or simply "A' Villa". It is the green lung and oldest park in the city. Its origins date back to the 18th century when Prince Ignazio Paternò Castello of Biscari created a private garden in the Baroque style, featuring hedge labyrinths, fountains, statues, and paths, known as “Il Labirinto”. In 1854, the garden was sold by the prince's heir, Princess Anna Moncada Paternò Castello, to the Municipality of Catania for a significant sum of 106,473 lire. The redevelopment project was entrusted to the architect Landolina, and the park officially opened to the public in 1883, transforming it into a place of urban recreation. Villa Bellini spans an area of about 70,000 square meters and hosts a rich variety of plants and trees, including Ficus macrophylla and Ficus nitida, mimosas, Aleppo pines, royal palms, cedars of Lebanon, jujubes, bitter oranges, boxwood, and laurel hedges, as well as several varieties of palms. The monumental entrance on Via Etnea was inaugurated in 1932, although the park can also be accessed from Via Cimarosa and Piazza Roma. In the western part of the park, you’ll find the Viale degli Uomini Illustri (Avenue of Illustrious Men), a path inaugurated in 1880 with marble busts dedicated to famous figures from Catania and Italian history. On the southern hill is the Chiosco della Musica (Music Kiosk), an elegant wrought-iron pavilion built in 1879 in the Moorish style. The park also has fountains, wrought-iron benches, a large lawn for sports, walkways for strolls, and areas for concerts and public events.
Orto Botanico:
Our journey concludes at the Botanical Garden of Catania, which is more than just a garden - it's a hub for research and biodiversity conservation. It's a member of Botanic Gardens Conservation International, with the international code CAT. The garden was founded in 1858 by the Benedictine monk Francesco Tornabene Roccaforte, who was appointed professor of Botany in 1843. He secured land in the Borgo area from the Royal University Committee. Architect Mario Di Stefano was commissioned in 1856 to design the buildings, and the garden was officially inaugurated in 1858 at a solemn ceremony attended by local and university authorities. Managed by the Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences at the University of Catania, the garden covers about 16,000 square meters. Located 75 meters above sea level, its soil is a mix of volcanic and alluvial origins, which allows it to host a wide variety of plant species. The collection includes a vast assortment of Mediterranean, tropical, subtropical, desert, and aquatic plants. Some are housed in greenhouses and a tepidarium to maintain specific temperature conditions. In addition to native and rare plant species, the garden also features collections of orchids, succulents, and historic trees of significant scenic value. It also holds a valuable Herbarium, which contains a collection of dried and cataloged plants essential for academic and educational research.
