OVERVIEW :
The city still feels the profound impact of its Greek heritage, which, alongside Roman rule, laid deep foundations.
Katane, a vibrant urban center and a crossroads of cultures, was founded in 729 BC by Chalcidian Greeks. Led by Tucle, they drove out the Sicels to establish their settlement in this corner of the island. After its conquest by Hieron I, the tyrant of Syracuse, in 476 BC, Catania was renamed Aitna. However, it later reclaimed its original name under Ducetius. The city still feels the profound impact of its Greek heritage, which, alongside Roman rule, laid deep foundations. Brilliant examples from the Imperial Age include the amphitheater, theater, odeon, thermal complexes, and the sophisticated water supply system.
